The Pacific Coast Highway in Two Days, Starting from Oxnard

The Pacific Coast Highway in Two Days, Starting from Oxnard

Skip Los Angeles traffic by collecting in Oxnard and heading straight for Big Sur. A route, three stops, and the one view worth leaving before dawn for.

Highway 1 rewards the traveller who starts early and stops often. Collecting the car in Oxnard rather than at LAX saves an hour of freeway and puts you on the coast road inside twenty minutes.

Day one

Santa Barbara for breakfast, the Gaviota coast by late morning, and a long, unhurried afternoon through San Luis Obispo. Stay in Cambria. The light at Moonstone Beach is the reason.

Day two

Leave before sunrise. Bixby Bridge with nobody on it is a small miracle, and the McWay Falls overlook is a short walk you will remember. Return the car in Monterey; one-way drop is available on this route.

From the concierge desk

Tell us your flight number when you book and your host will track it. If the plane is late, the car waits; if it is early, so are we.

Landing at Midnight: The Las Vegas Arrival, Done Properly

Red-eye into Harry Reid, keys in hand by 00:20, and a quiet run up the Strip while the city is still awake. How a late arrival becomes the best part of the trip.
